Air India has officially unveiled its newest signature premium lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). This is the latest step in the airline’s ongoing global transformation strategy. Called The Maharaja Lounge, the new premium space opens today, May 23rd and becomes Air India’s second flagship lounge concept following the debut of its redesigned lounge in Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

Located near Gate A1 in the International Terminal, the 3,300-square-foot space blends contemporary luxury with traditional Indian design influences to create what the airline describes as an immersive gateway to India before passengers even board their flight. Designed by internationally recognized hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates, the lounge accommodates up to 80 guests and is accessible to Air India First and Business Class travelers along with Platinum and Gold members of the airline’s Maharaja Club and Star Alliance Gold members. The lounge also features a dedicated Private Zone reserved exclusively for First Class passengers.

Air India says the interiors combine champagne, ivory, and deep red tones inspired by the airline’s branding while incorporating signature “Vista” design patterns throughout the furniture and walls. The space also highlights regional artistic heritage with installations from local artists and artwork crafted using upcycled aircraft components.

Among the lounge’s standout features is the Aviator’s Bar, a speakeasy-inspired cocktail space offering premium wines, whiskies and handcrafted signature drinks, including the “Maharaja Manhattan,” a twist on the classic cocktail infused with black pepper.

Guests will also have access to panoramic tarmac views overlooking arriving and departing aircraft from both the Business Class section and the Private Zone. Additional lounge spaces include a social area designed for interaction and relaxation, along with a dining section offering Indian and international cuisine through hot buffets, cold stations and live cooking counters.

The Private Zone for First Class travelers is designed as a quieter sanctuary with elevated service and added privacy for guests looking to relax or work before departure.

The San Francisco lounge represents another key milestone in Air India’s efforts to modernize its international premium experience as the airline continues investing heavily in new aircraft, upgraded cabins, redesigned lounges and expanded global operations under the ownership of Tata Group.

Anthony’ Take: With San Francisco serving as one of Air India’s most important North American gateways, the launch reinforces the airline’s focus on strengthening premium long-haul travel experiences for international passengers. I’m curious to check it out and always love grabbing some Indian food.
