Delta Air Lines has announced that it’s the latest US carrier to increase in checked bag fees amid rising fuel prices and broader industry pressures. The new pricing will take effect for tickets booked on or after April 8th.

Under the updated structure, most Delta passengers will now pay $45 for a first checked bag (up from $35, which is an increase of roughly 28%). The airline is also raising fees across additional baggage tiers. A second checked bag will now cost $55 (up from $45). The fee for a third checked bag sees a much steeper increase and rises by $50 for a total of $200. These changes do not apply to long-haul international flights.

Delta’s move comes shortly after similar increases by JetBlue and United Airlines while reinforcing a long-standing pattern in the aviation industry where carriers tend to follow one another when adjusting fees. With three major airlines now raising baggage prices, additional carriers may soon implement similar changes.

Airlines are facing mounting financial pressure due to rising jet fuel costs, fueled in part by geopolitical tensions impacting global energy supply. As a result, carriers are increasingly turning to ancillary fees, such as baggage charges, as a way to offset expenses without significantly raising base fares. These add-on fees have become a critical revenue stream for airlines while allowing them to maintain competitive ticket pricing while recouping operational costs elsewhere.

Not all travelers will be affected by the higher fees. Delta SkyMiles Medallion members will continue to receive complimentary checked bags based on their status level and customers holding eligible Delta co-branded American Express credit cards will retain their free baggage benefits. Delta last increased baggage fees in early 2024 and the latest changes signal that upward pricing pressure is continuing into 2026.

Anthony’s Take: For travelers, the increases highlight the growing importance of factoring in ancillary costs when booking flights (as baggage fees and other add-ons play an increasingly prominent role in the total cost of air travel).
