Earlier today, I wrote about GOL Linhas Aéreas preparing to enter the long-haul market with the addition of Airbus A330-900 aircraft to its fleet. Now the Brazilian airline has announced the launch of its first-ever long-haul route. Beginning July 8th, GOL will operate nonstop flights between Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
The new route will operate 3x weekly and represents GOL’s first direct intercontinental route. The launch was developed in partnership with Rio de Janeiro’s city government as part of efforts to strengthen the city’s global connectivity and tourism sector.
GOL has significantly expanded its presence in Rio de Janeiro in recent years, investing approximately $1.2 billion in local operations and infrastructure. The airline currently operates more than 30 domestic and international routes from Rio de Janeiro. These operations play an important role in supporting the local economy, contributing to job creation and strengthening the city’s position as a key aviation hub in Brazil.
The new route will connect two of the most important tourism and business destinations in the Americas. By offering nonstop service between the cities, GOL aims to provide travelers across the continent with more convenient options for international travel. The launch also aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to expand beyond its traditional short- and medium-haul network and build a stronger presence in long-haul markets.
The new route was formally announced during a press event held today. The ceremony was attended by several prominent officials, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes, Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, Abra Group CEO Adrian Neuhauser, and GOL CEO Celso Ferrer. Tickets for the new route are now available through GOL’s website and mobile app.
Anthony’s Take: GOL wasted no time in announcing its first route after the aircraft news. It’s great to see another option between New York and Brazil coming this summer.
