Delta Air Lines has unveiled a series of leadership changes as longtime operations leader John Laughter prepares to retire after a 30-year career with the airline. The leadership reshuffle, announced by CEO Ed Bastian in a memo to employees, is designed to strengthen Delta’s executive team and support the company’s long-term strategy of building what it describes as the world’s leading airline for the next generation of customers and employees.
As part of the changes, Peter Carter has been promoted to President. Carter will take on an expanded role overseeing enterprise strategy along with global policy and legal matters, Delta’s international portfolio, real estate operations, and the airline’s sustainability and diversity initiatives. Carter has spent a decade at Delta and has played a central role in several strategic initiatives across the airline’s business operations.

With John Laughter retiring effective April 30th, Dan Janki will step into the role of Chief Operating Officer. In this position, Janki will oversee all aspects of Delta’s operational performance. His responsibilities will include oversight of Airport Customer Service, Flight Operations, In-Flight Service, the Operations and Customer Center, Reservation Sales and Customer Care, Technical Operations, and the airline’s Corporate Safety, Security and Compliance teams.
Erik Snell has been appointed Delta’s new Chief Financial Officer. Snell joined Delta two decades ago in the finance organization and has held leadership roles across multiple operational areas within the company. Most recently, he served as Chief Customer Experience Officer. In his new position, Snell will lead Delta’s finance organization as well as oversee the airline’s fleet strategy, supply chain operations, and its refinery subsidiary, Monroe Energy.
Ranjan Goswami will take on the role of Chief Marketing and Product Officer following the departure of Chief Marketing Officer Alicia Tillman, who is leaving the airline to pursue other opportunities outside the company. Goswami has been instrumental in shaping Delta’s brand strategy and strengthening partnerships while leading initiatives focused on improving the customer travel experience.
Alain Bellemare, Executive Vice President and President of International, will also take on an expanded role as Chairman of Delta TechOps. His additional responsibilities are expected to strengthen leadership within the airline’s maintenance and technical operations division.
Under the new leadership structure, Peter Carter, Dan Janki, Erik Snell, and Ranjan Goswami will all report directly to CEO Ed Bastian.
Anthony’s Take: The changes mark one of the most significant shifts in Delta’s executive leadership in recent years and reflect the airline’s focus on future growth and continued premium positioning.
