Health officials in North Dakota have launched an investigation after a hotel employee at the Expressway Suites in Fargo was caught soaking bed sheets in the property’s hot tub and stirring them with a broom handle. A family staying at the hotel witnessed the employee dumping bed linens into the bubbling water and mixing them around. Shocked by what they saw, the guests recorded the scene and shared the video on social media, where it quickly went viral and drew widespread condemnation.

The North Dakota Department of Health confirmed that an investigation is now underway to determine whether the hotel violated any sanitation or safety codes. Officials said they are reviewing the footage and have spoken with hotel management to ensure the practice has ceased.

The Expressway Suites management acknowledged that the sheets had already been washed but claimed the employee had been soaking them in the hot tub to remove small stains. The staff member reportedly explained that the hot chlorinated water was thought to help lift residual discoloration. The hotel stated that the hot tub was immediately drained, cleaned, and sanitized, and that the employee has been spoken to about the incident.

A former hotel worker later revealed that the use of hot tubs to treat stained linens had been an informal cleaning method dating back more than 15 years. Officials noted that while the practice is highly unsanitary, there were no specific regulations banning it (largely because regulators had never conceived that it might occur).

As a result of the investigation, the health department ordered the hotel to immediately stop using the hot tub for linen soaking. The department confirmed that new regulations are likely forthcoming to explicitly prohibit such activity in the future and no fine was issued for this incident.

Anthony’s Take: Hotels are a hot bed for germs and not really that clean whether you’re staying in a Motel 6 or the Ritz-Carlton. This is gross on so many levels and will hopefully not be repeated after this investigation.
