In July, I wrote about Marriott’s $355 million acquisition of the lifestyle hotel brand known as citizenM. The brand’s global portfolio currently has 37 properties across more than 20 cities in the United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific. citizenM had a loyalty program called mycitizenM+ that will live on even after the hotels are integrated with Marriott Bonvoy®, but there are some changes coming for loyal members.
Unlike traditional hotel loyalty programs where elite status is earned by nights or money spent, mycitizenM+ carries an annual fee for if you want the perks. Membership is currently priced at $120 per year and it offers:
- 15% off all stays
- 15% off food and drinks
- Up to 30% off during sales
- 2:00 PM late checkout
- Complimentary upgrades to rooms with premium views
- Access to exclusive deals
- Discounts on meeting rooms and complimentary co-working benefits
Marriott recently informed mycitizenM+ members that updates are coming on October 28th. This is the same day that these hotels will be joining the Marriott Bonvoy® program per news first shared by Upgraded Points.
mycitizenM+ will see the following changes:
- Price increase: The annual membership fee will go from $120 to $170.
- New Marriott Bonvoy® benefits: mycitizenM+ members will receive complimentary Marriott Bonvoy® Gold Elite status. This offers perks like room upgrades, bonus points on stays, member-exclusive rates, priority late checkout (based upon availability), and welcome points as a bonus at check-in.
No other benefits of the current program are changing. While the $50 increase might seem steep, mycitizenM+ members will have access to receiving benefits at Marriott’s massive portfolio of brands around the world.
Anthony’s Take: Marriott continues to grow and citizenM is just the latest acquisition. It’s good that these hotels are being integrated and that those who pay for status will see some new, tangible benefits.
