The Waldorf Astoria New York is an iconic hotel with refined service that defined a bygone era on Park Avenue since it opened in 1931. It has been closed since 2017 while being renovated and finally reopened today. The hotel was slated to open on September 1st, but construction was completed early and it’s now available once again.

In 2015, the hotel was purchased by Anbang Insurance Group  in China for $1.95 billion. The meticulously crafted restoration was led by architects Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill as well as interior designers from Pierre-Yves Rochon and cost $1 billion. In-depth archival research and a close collaboration with the Landmarks Preservation Commission ensured the integrity of the original 1931 design of the Waldorf Astoria New York was preserved.

The hotel will offer a new period of luxury for New York City with signature restaurants called Lex Yard (helmed by Chef Michael Anthony) and Yoshoku (it offers a Japanese kaiseki-inspired menu), the return of Peacock Alley known for its innovative cocktails and extravagant Sunday Brunch, 43,000 square feet of event space that will open September 1st, and a 30,000-square-foot spa and fitness center that includes an outdoor terrace.

The hotel used to have 1,400 rooms, but after renovations it now has 375 rooms and suites as well as 372 residences. Rooms will be large by NYC standards with each measuring 475 square feet on average.

Cash rates run around $1,100 to $1,800 per night plus taxes. If you’re redeeming Hilton Honors’ points, rooms will cost 150,000 per night.

Chris Nassetta, President and CEO of Hilton, said:

In many ways, Waldorf Astoria New York is the most important hotel in the world. It is the original luxury property and the place where luxury service was perfected. It not only holds a special place in Hilton’s history, but also in modern history. Today, we build on this legacy as we mark the start of a new chapter for this iconic property. We look forward to once again welcoming guests to experience its timeless charm and modern enhancements, as this hotel and Waldorf Astoria properties around the world set the standard for luxury stays.”

Anthony’s Take: I love modern design, but there is something to be said about classic, elegant hotels like the Waldorf Astoria New York. I can’t wait to check it out on one of my trips to NYC.
