I live half of the year with Tampa International Airport (TPA) as my home airport. Any news around this airport always piques my interest with new routes being particularly exciting. Colombian airline (and Star Alliance member), Avianca is adding four new routes to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA) as well as adding Tampa International Airport (TPA) to its route map.

With these new routes launching in 2025, Avianca will offer 16 direct routes from Florida to Latin America. New options include:

  • Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG) to/from Tampa International Airport (TPA)
  • Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) to/from Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Managua’s Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • Medellin’s José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • San Jose’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to/from Miami International Airport (MIA)

Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca, said:

Florida has historically been a key point for connecting with Latin America, so it is essential for us to help more families reunite, boost tourism and promote business. So far in 2024, we have transported more than four million travelers on more than 27,000 flights to and from the United States. So, these new routes respond to the needs of our customers and represent an opportunity for them to fly directly to more destinations in both regions where we already have a strong presence.”

Bogotá will be connected to its third city in Florida when flights to Tampa International Airport (TPA). Flights will be offered 4x weekly beginning on March 30th. The route will be flown with an Airbus A320. It offers 12 Business Class and 168 Economy Class seats. Travelers will have easy access to more than 75 destinations in more than 25 countries in America and Europe through Avianca’s Bogotá hub.

Anthony’s Take: It’s great to see Avianca expanding and offering more nonstop options to connect Florida and Central America. I’m particularly excited to see a new route and airline serving Tampa.

The Guatemala to Miami flight is not new. I’ve flown it both ways in the past.
