Southwest Airlines is going to make it easier to jet around the Sunshine State starting in August with four new routes that will fly within the state of Florida. But, will locals really want to fly between airports that are not that far apart? All routes connect through Orlando International Airport (MCO) and add to the carrier’s existing flights to/from there and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

The following routes to/from Orlando International Airport (MCO) will operate 2x daily beginning in August:

  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)
  • Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
  • Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)

Both American Airlines and Delta Air Lines fly the Miami route multiple times daily. LATAM will join the fray and fly this route beginning in June 2025. Spirit Airlines is cutting its flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Orlando International Airport (MCO) in May 2025. Silver Airways also flies to several airports within Florida. The state has become a still increasingly popular vacation destination and airlines have increased capacity across cities. American operates a hub at Miami International Airport (MIA) and rumors have swirled for some time that United wants one at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Orlando International Airport (MCO), or Tampa International Airport (TPA).

Flying passengers around the state seems to be a different and confusing business model, but with all roads leading to Orlando, I have to assume these flights are feeder flights to route folks from other Florida cities through the city that hosts the House of Mouse, fill planes, and then fly them onward on Southwest’s route network.

Anthony’s Take: The distance between some of these cities is not long. It will be interesting to see how these fare for Southwest.
