Spirit Airlines has added nine new routes to its network with these routes directly challenging flights that Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines operate from their respective hubs. It’s interesting that Spirit is choosing to take on some full service carriers and we’ll have to see if this helps to lower prices on these routes.

Boston Skyline

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)

Spirit will launch three routes from Delta’s New England hub at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). These include:

  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (daily; starts on June 5th)
  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) (daily; starts on June 5th)
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (daily; starts on June 5th)

Newark

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Spirit will launch service from United’s East Coast hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from:

  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) (daily; starts on June 5th)

Portland

Portland International Airport (PDX)

Alaska Airlines operates a hub out of Portland International Airport (PDX). Spirit will launch three new routes, including:

  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) (daily; starts on June 5th)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) (6x weekly; starts on May 8th)
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN) (daily; starts on June 5th)

Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

Spirit will add two flights from Delta’s western hub at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). These include:

  • Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) (daily; starts on June 20th)
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN) (daily; starts on June 20th)

Anthony’s Take: I love when Spirit and other low-cost carriers enter one of the legacy carriers’ hubs. This often provides price pressure and passengers can score some good deals.
