Yesterday, I wrote about Air New Zealand launching its groundbreaking Economy Skynest™. This world-first innovation will allow Economy Class passengers to book lie-flat sleep pods in the sky. The new product will open for reservations on May 18th and debut onboard the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 aircraft starting in November. Pricing is reasonable at $495 for a four-hour block of time. I know if I were flying Economy between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Auckland Airport (AKL) that I would definitely look into this option and would want to book two blocks of time (which would still be cheaper than a Business Class seat). The airline restricts this, unfortunately, on the almost 18-hour flight.

Designed to transform the Economy Class experience, the Skynest™ introduces six lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style layout positioned between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. For the first time, passengers in these cabins will have the option to book dedicated time to stretch out fully, lie flat, and sleep during their journey.

Each pod was developed over several years and tested with more than 200 customers. The result is a private, calming space equipped with a full-length mattress, fresh bedding, ambient lighting, ventilation, and charging ports. Passengers can reserve four-hour sessions with two sessions available per flight at launch (allowing time to settle in, sleep, and wake naturally).

The Skynest™ experience also includes thoughtful amenities designed for rest and well-being. Each session comes with a “Nestcessities” kit featuring an eye mask, ear plugs, socks, skincare products, and dental essentials. Privacy curtains, individual lighting controls, and in-pod seatbelts further enhance the experience to create a dedicated sleep environment within the cabin.

Anthony’s Take: $495 is a bargain for a space to stretch out and possibly take a nap for four hours. I wish Air New Zealand allowed passengers to book more than one block of time, but I get its reasoning so that more people can use it while also not cannibalizing its Business Class.
