United Airlines announced today a new domestic first class seat. It offers three types of charging (wireless, USB-C, and an AC household-style outlet), 13-inch seatback screens and 18-inch tray tables, Bluetooth connectivity, and privacy screens among other design elements. This will be United’s first update to domestic First Class seat design since 2015.

The airline expects the new seat to be installed on 200 Boeing 737 NG, Airbus A321neo, and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft by 2026. The new seats look gorgeous and all of the features will be much appreciated when they roll out. Unfortunately, United’s existing Airbus A319 and A320 as well as other Boeing 737s will not receive these seats. They’re being refit with other First Class seats that include new seat cushions and upholstery, as well as winged headrests. They will not have privacy dividers or wireless charging once installed.

Mark Muren, United Managing Director of Identity, Product and Loyalty, said:

This new United First seat is designed around the modern traveler – more charging options, bigger spaces for devices, food, drinks and personal items and extra privacy. As we evolve the onboard experience, we’re upending old industry norms and anticipating future needs to accommodate the new ways people live and travel.”

United First Charging

Lots of Device Charging Options

I love that I’ll be able to charge multiple devices at once with three types of charging available in each seat: wireless, AC household-style outlets,  and USB-C. The wireless charger is located in the armrest. This gives passengers line-of-sight to notifications and frees their hands and tray tables.

Better Entertainment Options

The 13-inch, high-definition screens are Bluetooth capable and include a remote for those who can’t to reach the touch screen.

More Space With a Smarter Design

Each seat offers designated space for devices, food, drinks, and more. A larger, 18-inch tray table features a built-in tablet holder and enough space for most laptops. Authentic Italian quartzite cocktail tables and bottle holders between each seat will allow passengers to not have to balance gadgets, drinks, and snacks on their tray table.

More Privacy and Comfort

The large seats are upholstered with comfortable vegan leather. They will also offer passengers more privacy and space with dividers, winged headrests, and tray tables that deploy from outer armrests. The seat features five inches of recline and adjustable aisle arm rests that lower completely.

Anthony’s Take: I’m excited to try these new seats. Even though I am critical of many of United’s misses, this investment looks like a win for First Class passengers and puts United ahead in its domestic hard-product offering.
