US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found more than 71 pounds of marijuana in a Texas woman’s bags at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). She has been charged with felony possession with intent to distribute, transporting controlled substances, and narcotics conspiracy before boarding a flight to London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

Du Li Park, 30, of The Colony, TX was identified through her baggage tags and escorted to the CBP’s inspection station along with her two hard-sided suitcases. Officers found 60 vacuum-sealed bags filled with marijuana inside. These are valued at $330,000. There have been increasing instances of US-based growers and retailers smuggling marijuana into Europe and Africa. Similar arrests occurred in February, March, and April according to authorities.

In August, I wrote about a passenger at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) who was arrested attempting to smuggle 41 pounds of weed in his luggage. Another woman was arrested at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) after marijuana was found in her adult diaper.

Marc E. Calixte, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Washington, DC, said in the release:

Bulk marijuana smuggling is illegal, and Customs and Border Protection will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to hold smugglers accountable. Travelers who gamble with their freedom by smuggling bulk amounts of marijuana for a little extra cash may find themselves on the losing end of that proposition.”

The incident occurred on November 23rd according to CBS News. It’s unclear what airline she was set to fly as British Airways, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic all connect Washington DC with the UK’s capital city. Had Park been successful, the drugs could have sold for 2x to 3x the listed value on the streets.

Anthony’s Take: Not the best idea to try to smuggle controlled substances and especially in this quantity. Park is likely going to face some harsh punishment if convicted on all charges.

This is nuts. Obviously this was for personal use. Doesn’t everyone keep a couple of decades worth of pot on hand at all times?
