We spent the weekend in Mexico City. While heading home today, we took the time to check out two lounges. We stopped by Aeromexico’s Salon Premier for a quick coffee before heading to The Centurion® Lounge by American Express located in  Terminal 2 at Mexico City International Airport (MEX). It’s a great space and crowding is managed well. You are assigned a table and escorted to it. There are two levels to the lounge with bars on both, but no one was seated at either. I think these seats might be used when the tables are full. All food and drinks are ordered through servers and aside from the restrooms, you have no reason to wander the lounge or fight for space. American Express operates four lounges in this airport with three of them found in Terminal 1.Amex Centurion Lounge MEX 5

The ubiquitous plant wall found in every American Express lounge is also here.

Access

Access to the Centurion® Lounge is given to customers carrying The Platinum Card® from American ExpressThe Business Platinum Card® from American Express, or The Centurion® Card. Unlike US lounges, those with The Platinum Card® from American Express are entitled to bring two guests (or immediate family). This is the same for the Centurion® Card. Additional guest passes can be purchased for $70 each. The menu has prices but all dishes are free for the cardholders listed above.

Anthony’s Take: We had a lovely, calm breakfast in the lounge. The food tasted great and the service was friendly and prompt. I wish US locations would copy this format, but imagine demand would outpace supply (not to mention higher labor costs).

Bar

There are  several bars throughout the lounge on both levels. Unlike most airline lounges, all alcohol here is complimentary. This includes premium spirits and wines. American Express even has cocktail menus that vary by location. You will not find the self-serve drinks and coffee machines that are available in US locations. All beverages need to be ordered from the servers.

Food

We visited the lounge during breakfast and were presented with the menu above and here. We ordered two cappuccinos, two Green Chilaquiles, and the Pastries. Everything was fresh and well made.

Seating & Decor

As noted above, this space is split between two levels with lots of seating on both. Decor is modern and I loved the plants in the hallway leading to the lounge. There are all sorts of configurations for working, dining, and relaxing. The lounge was pretty busy during our visit, but it did not feel that way because everyone had an assigned space.

Two chairs and the dog picture that adorns every lounge American Express operates were near the entrance.

Amenities

This Centurion® Lounge at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) offers restrooms, magazines, free Wi-Fi, and all of the food and beverages on a complimentary basis. You won’t find spas, coffee shops, or other amenities here.

This mysterious door seems like it is for Centurion® Cardholders. I’m not sure what’s inside as it stayed closed during my visit.

Overall Impression:

I love the calmness of the lounge and the table service makes it even nicer. The two levels offer plenty of space and the food was tasty. I’d like to try the lunch/dinner menu in the future.

Anthony’s Credit Card Pick: I love the lounges where The Platinum Card® from American Express grants me access. It has had a prominent place in my wallet for many years now. While it does have an annual fee of $695, it provides many travel benefits and will always be my go-to for lounge access (both Delta Sky Clubs® and Centurion® Lounges) and booking airfare from the airlines to earn 5x points (up to $500,000 per calendar year booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel). Learn moreRates & Fees. Any idea why there are prices on a menu when the items are free?

Also, it looks quite nice. I’ve never heard of American Express having multiple lounges in the same airport. Do you have any insight as to why they would have so many there?

I’m not sure about the pricing or why they’re operating so many here. We sat down and the server said everything is free for Platinum. They had signs for other non-US Amex cards. Maybe those customers pay? I’m not sure.

When I went last time, I was able to get a half hour massage for free as well. Maybe the one I went to was in a different terminal?
I also went during lunch and the menu was larger for sure.
There’re prices on the menus because I believe that people with certain regional AMEX can get entry but they do not get free food and beverages at the AMEX lounge, so they would have to pay.
They also gave me a bill at the end and it’s recommended to tip so that’s not common for a lounge too.
