I’ve complained a good amount about the poor quality of United’s in-flight catering and even gone as far as to compare what is served in premium cabins to what people dine on while incarcerated in prisons (more here). It varies from blah to down-right disgusting, but thankfully I have yet to have an experience as bad as this passenger (maybe maggots are reserved for Economy).

Maggot in dinner on long haul flight…

A passenger took to Reddit to share a photo of the meal that they were served on a flight from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The meal was said to be covered in foil (which is the giveaway that this was not served in Polaris®). When the passenger opened the foil, they found a maggot.

On Reddit, the original poster named @rereadit said:

I was super quiet and didn’t wanna make a scene but made it clear post-flight that this isn’t a ‘me’ issue but a food safety concern. Didn’t get much from them when I repeatedly asked what their process was for getting food from kitchen to plane.”

To remedy the situation, the passenger was offered 7,500 MileagePlus miles or a $150 electronic travel credit (this is so ridiculously meager).

Anthony’s Take: Thankfully, I have never had a meal infested with vermin on a United Airlines flight. This is not unique to United as there are reports from time to time across airlines about roaches, crickets, caterpillars, and all sorts of other creepy crawlies making it into inflight meals. Yuck!
