In taking a few thousand flights, I have only checked bags a handful of times. I want my things with me, pack light, don’t want to have to wait at a baggage carousel, and don’t trust the airlines to take care of my property. An American Airlines passenger shared on Reddit how their suitcase fared after being forced to gate check it and then finding out it was run over by a baggage truck.

The clothing inside is ruined along with the cosmetics and this passenger’s retainer. The bag tag shows that this happened after arriving on American Airlines flight AA1500, which flies from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Nashville International Airport (BNA). Either it was damaged in loading it (unlikely) or when it was sent to baggage claim.
The way delta/airfrance returned my checked baggage. Everything is missing.

This is not the only bag reported destroyed this week. Images of the bag above have been making the rounds with Air France guilty of what looks like throwing this bag through a wood chipper. Hopefully, this passenger was given a check for all of their damaged and missing items when they arrived in Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH).
Anthony’s Take: Pack light. I find that I can get away with even week-long trips with a carry-on plus my laptop bag. As long as my items are with me I know my bag won’t suffer like these two above.

Based on the photo, it seems the passenger brought this issue upon herself by trying to bring that amount of gels and liquids through.
But it was a gate check so it made it through security!
And security is probably congratulating themselves for “catching someone trying to smuggle gels and powders onboard”.
