United Airlines has 99 Airbus A320 aircraft in its fleet. Each of these planes currently have 12 First Class seats, but the rumor is that these will soon be retrofitted to have 16 seats. This represents a 33% increase without the need to remove Economy Class seats.
The Airbus A320 is currently one of my favorite aircraft as seat 1B has tons of legroom. My gut tells me that this will change with the addition of more seats. Since seats are not being cut, the space needs to come from somewhere.
United’s first retrofitted A320 (N438UA) with the new NEXT cabin is now on its way to ORD.

If rumors are correct, this A320 is also the first to increase first class from 12 to 16 seats, while maintaining the current amount of economy class seats. As announced back in 2019 pic.twitter.com/yCUpzFrpsp— Emiliano Padilla (@iTripReport) May 31, 2023
iTripReport is reporting that United’s first A320 is being sent to be refit for the 16-seat First Class cabin.
Anthony’s Take: Growing premium cabins means more opportunities to snag a seat up front either by buying it or getting an upgrade. We’ll see if this rumor is true, but it has been talked about since 2019.
