Back in March 2024, I wrote about United starting to offer mileage pooling (the ability to combine miles from family members and friends into one account for faster award earnings). While this was nothing new for airlines globally (JetBlue and Frontier Airlines have been doing this for some time and there are dozens of international carriers that also allow families to combine miles), United Airlines was the first of the big three in the US to allow families (and friends) this option. Now, it has made an improvement to the offer that many members might find valuable.

While the feature has been widely praised to date, it has come with one major limitation: pooled miles could only be redeemed for flights operated by United. That restriction has now been removed. As first reported by Travel on Points, MileagePlus® members can now use pooled miles not only for United-operated flights, but also for award travel on the carrier’s airline partners (including all Star Alliance members). This change increases the usefulness of mileage pooling and makes the feature far more attractive for families and occasional travelers.

Mileage pooling allows any MileagePlus® member aged 18 or older to create a miles pool free of charge through their MileagePlus® account. Pool leaders can invite up to four friends or family members of any age to join, which allows multiple travelers to combine their miles toward a single redemption.

United Mileage Pooling

Under the updated rules:

  • Pool leaders can invite up to four MileagePlus® members to join a pool
  • Pooled miles can be redeemed through United’s website or mobile app
  • Pooled miles can now be used for award travel on United and partner airlines, including Star Alliance carriers
  • There is no limit on the number of miles members can contribute to a pool
  • Members may leave a pool at any time, but any miles they contributed remain in the pool
  • Members who leave a pool must wait 90 days before joining another pool
  • A pool that loses a member cannot add a replacement member for 90 days
  • Mileage contributions do not impact elite status qualification
  • Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) are only earned by the traveler flying on an award ticket booked with pooled miles

For many travelers, mileage pooling solves a longstanding problem. Families and infrequent flyers often accumulate small mileage balances spread across several accounts. Individually, those balances may never be enough to book an award ticket. Combined, however, they can quickly become valuable. The feature gives travelers a reason to enroll everyone in the household in MileagePlus®, even if they only fly once or twice a year.

Anthony’s Take: More than two years later, neither American or Delta has introduced a comparable program. The latest enhancement makes MileagePlus® even more attractive, particularly for casual travelers. Combined with the fact that MileagePlus® miles never expire, the ability to pool miles and redeem them across the Star Alliance network significantly strengthens the program’s overall value proposition.
