A drone near Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) briefly disrupted operations and triggered a security response as Air Force One departed with President Donald Trump on board. The incident prompted an immediate ground stop and the deployment of helicopters to secure the surrounding airspace.
The disruption occurred during the departure of Air Force One, when a drone was spotted flying dangerously close to the airport. Pilots on a Delta Air Lines flight informed passengers of the situation in real time and explained that a drone had come too close to the aircraft during the presidential departure and that authorities were responding.
As a precaution, airport officials halted all flight movements at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), temporarily suspending departures and arrivals. Helicopters were quickly dispatched to locate and assess the drone (highlighting the seriousness of the security breach given the presence of a presidential aircraft in the airspace).
Air Force One departed safely without incident and the ground stop was lifted shortly afterward. Airport operations have since returned to normal. Drone incursions have become an increasing concern for aviation authorities, particularly in restricted airspace around airports and sensitive operations such as presidential movements. While no injuries were reported in this case, even a small drone can pose a significant risk to aircraft, especially during critical phases of flight like takeoff and landing.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the Secret Service regarding the incident. However, such events typically trigger investigations aimed at identifying the drone operator and determining whether laws governing restricted airspace were violated.
Anthony’s Take: The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict compliance with drone regulations (particularly near major airports and high-security operations during a time where we are in a conflict with Iran).
