An easyJet pilot might be looking for a new line of work after he was reportedly intoxicated during a layover after a day of drinking and ended up stripping naked in a hotel bar around 2:30 AM. The incident occurred on August 5th in Cape Verde, which is an island nation in West Africa. The captain was scheduled to return to flying the next day, but a replacement was found in time to relieve him of his duties.
The Sun reports that the apparently intoxicated captain was supposed to operate easyJet flight EZ8996 between Cape Verde’s Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) and London Gatwick Airport (LGW) on August 6th (only around 13 hours after he allegedly got naked in the bar). The pilot was reported to be in a “paralytic” state and walked nude into a closed bar area before meandering to the gym and spa. While an alternate pilot was sent to operate the flight, it ended up diverting to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) on unrelated reasons.
The crew was on a layover at the Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa. A spokesperson for EasyJet shared the following statement:
As soon as we were made aware, the pilot was immediately stood down from duty, in line with our procedures, pending an investigation. The safety of our passengers and crew is EasyJet’s highest priority.”
This is not the only recent incident involving a pilot and alcohol. A few weeks ago, I wrote about a Delta pilot who reportedly had failed a test for alcohol consumption after she was already on the aircraft. This has been disputed and some say the allegation is false. Delta had to cancel the flight and investigate.
Anthony’s Take: I’ve said that alcohol and flying don’t mix so well before, but this is certainly the case when you’re set to fly an aircraft. If the allegations are true, this pilot might have cost himself his career.
