Frontier Airlines is enhancing the benefits offered to its elite members with expanded opportunities for seat upgrades. Starting today, elite members can upgrade to Premium Seating and UpFront Plus (with guaranteed empty middle seats). When it rolls out, members will also have access to complimentary First Class upgrades.
Frontier currently has four seating categories. These include:
- UpFront Plus℠: an aisle seat or window seat in the front two rows where the middle seat is empty
- Premium: a seat with extra legroom
- Preferred: a seat closer to the front of the plane
- Standard: any seat that is not UpFront Plus℠, Premium, or Preferred
First Class will become a fifth choice when introduced later this year. Seat upgrades can be selected through the Frontier Airlines mobile app or on flyfrontier.com. Diamond members are eligible for upgrades starting 24 hours before departure. Platinum members are eligible for upgrades starting 12 hours before departure while Gold members can be upgraded up to four hours before departure. Criteria for upgrade priority within elite levels and other details have not yet been released.
Frontier Airlines Chief Commercial Officer, Bobby Schroeter, said:
We have so much in store for 2025 as we write the next chapter of The New Frontier and show that luxury and affordability can fly hand in hand. Frontier’s most loyal customers will have even more reason to make us their airline of choice this year as they start enjoying free seat upgrades and other enhancements, adding extra comfort and convenience to their travel.”
Last month, the low-cost carrier announced that it’s adding First Class seats to the first two rows of its aircraft beginning this year. This puts it in line with Spirit and the legacy carriers with a premium offering to meet the demand that has bubbled up over the past few years. Frontier will offer eight first class seats on each aircraft in a 2-2 configuration.
Anthony’s Take: It’s fascinating to watch Frontier try to up its game to compete with the demand for premium seats. I give the airline credit for pivoting and we’ll see how this works out.
