Star Alliance was founded in May 1997 and is the largest airline alliance with 25 members including United Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Singapore, SWISS, and more. The alliance operates several lounges globally and announced today that it’s opening a new lounge (its first in Asia) in China at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN).

The lounge is now open for flights departing from Terminal 1. The new Star Alliance lounge is located on the upper level of the existing GBIA lounge in the Terminal 1 international area. The lounge features an open layout and offers around 8,000 square feet of space to accommodate up to 100 guests. The lounge is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Star Alliance CEO, Theo Panagiotoulias, said:

Lounges are a critical component for the effortless travel experience we aim to provide to our member airline passengers. As a key strategic hub in Asia, Guangzhou serves as an important gateway for our guests. We are excited to inaugurate our first lounge in Asia, given the significance of the continent to aviation growth today and in the years to come.”

Currently, 10 Star Alliance member airlines operate from the airport and offer 774 weekly departures to 50 destinations in 10 countries. These include:

  • Air China
  • ANA
  • Asiana Airlines
  • EGYPTAIR
  • Ethiopian Airlines
  • EVA Air
  • Shenzhen Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • THAI
  • Turkish Airlines

Access is granted to First and Business Class passengers and those with Star Alliance Gold status that are departing from the international area of Terminal 1 on a member airline. United Club and Air Canada Maple Leaf Club members are also admitted to the lounge.

Anthony’s Take: I have been to the Star Alliance lounges in Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). I love that Star Alliance operates these and is continuing to open more.
