A fire broke out today at the Business Class lounge (known as The Pier) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). The lounge had to be evacuated and 252 people (200 guests and 52 staff) were present at the time.

The fire broke out at “its supporting facilities” and staff immediately called the fire department. The Pier is Cathay Pacific’s largest lounge at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). A report of smoke coming from an electrical meter room was reported at 9:55 AM. No injuries were reported and the extent of the damage is being evaluated as the lounge remains closed.

The South China Morning Post reports that a police spokesman shared this statement:

An initial investigation suspected that a short circuit was involved, which was deemed to be not suspicious.”

Cathay Pacific also released a statement:

As the lounge is temporarily closed for repairs until further notice, we have arranged for customers to transfer to other Cathay Pacific lounges before boarding their flights.”

The Pier, located at level 6 at the Terminal 1 near Gate 65, is a popular lounge with frequent flyers and premium passengers. It offers noodles, tea service, and other “Hong Kong experiences.”

Anthony’s Take: Thankfully no one was injured and it sounds like the damage will be minimal. Cathay operates multiple lounges at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and these will accommodate guests in the interim.
