Virgin Atlantic is cancelling its last route to the Far East with it dropping flights to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). The airline had previously cut Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT).

October 26th will be the last day that Virgin Atlantic flies from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). The flight has been operated daily using a Boeing 787-9 aircraft with 31 Upper Class, 35 Premium Economy, and 192 Economy Class seats. Virgin Atlantic launched this route in 1999, paused it during the pandemic, and restarted it in May 2023. British Airways and China Eastern will continue to operate this route.

Virgin Atlantic Route Map

Virgin Atlantic flies to 11 cities in the United States, one in Canada, eight in the Caribbean, four in Africa, three in India, plus one in the United Arab Emirates and one in Israel. Delta owns a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic and the two airlines operate a transatlantic joint venture.

Anthony’s Take: Virgin Atlantic continues to contract in the number of destinations it serves (soon to be 31). The airline has a strong operation within the US and some other key cities where there is high demand. Let’s see if they add a new city to replace Shanghai.
