The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) broke its record again for the most passengers going through security screening on a single day. The latest record was broken on June 23rd (2.99 million people), but this will likely be short lived as the agency expects to break this record again on June 28th when travel kicks off for the Independence Day holiday.

The TSA expects to screen more than 32 million individuals from Thursday, June 27th through Monday, July 8th, which is a 5.4% increase over 2023 Independence Day holiday travel volumes. The peak travel day is expected to be June 28th when the TSA shares that over three million travelers are expected. The demand for travel is far from dying down as seven of the top 10 busiest travel days ever have occurred over the past month.

TSA Administrator, David Pekoske, said:

We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday. Compared to last year, we have cut our attrition rates by almost half and increased our recruiting as a result of the TSA Compensation Plan that was funded in the budget passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy. We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”

The TSA says that it is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes.

Anthony’s Take: It looks like it’s going to be another busy summer. It’s crazy that planes are still packed and people are still taking to the skies at unprecedented levels.
