Canadian carrier, WestJet, is adding service between Regina International Airport (YQR) and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) as well as flights between Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). These new routes will connect WestJet to two of Delta’s biggest hubs and offer onward connections to just about anywhere.

Flights between Regina International Airport (YQR) and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) are resuming after being off of the airline’s schedule for the past eight years. The flight will be operated daily on De Havilland-Bombardier Dash-8 aircraft by Westjet Encore (its regional, feeder airline).
Additionally, flights between Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) began yesterday. These daily flights are operated by Boeing 737-700 aircraft with 12 Premium, 12 Extended Comfort, and 108 Economy Class seats.
John Weatherill, WestJet Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, said:
Our new route to Atlanta, will bolster incredible connectivity for Edmonton, stimulating critical new opportunities for the city’s vibrant business sector and visitor economy to grow and thrive. With year-round service, we are opening up Edmonton to the world and the world to Edmonton with convenient access to a mega-global hub, which hosts more than 1,000 flights per day to more than 200 international and domestic destinations.”
Last year, I wrote about WestJet declining to pursue a joint venture with Delta Air Lines. While it might not have locked that in, it still has a partnership with the Atlanta-based carrier. Delta Medallion members receive their allotted Medallion baggage allowance, lounge access, priority boarding, priority check-in, preferred seats, priority bag drop, priority baggage handling, priority security, and priority transfer desk access when flying with WestJet (and vice versa for WestJet elite members).
Anthony’s Take: I flew WestJet between Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) (more here). I also flew Air Canada Rouge and it just beat WestJet by a little bit. I’d fly the airline again and love that I can credit flights to Delta.

I flew Westjet last year on a Dela ticket between Toronto and Vancouver. The experience was not a good one. Getting a seat assignment was a monumental task with an unfriendly website and no one in customer service answering the phone. Finally when I did get a seat, I had to pay extra for an uncomfortable seat. The five hour flight offered no IFE and a sparse meal. The return on Delta included an upgraded first class seat on both flights to Atlanta. Never again.
