American Airlines is the last of the airlines in the United States to offer a First Class cabin. This is going away, but American is introducing the next best thing: The Flagship Suite® Preferred seat. This will be better than standard Business Class with privacy doors, upgraded bedding, pajamas, and amenity kits.
The Flagship Suite® Preferred seat will be in the front row on new Boeing 787-9 and retrofitted Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The seats will also offer wireless charging, Bluetooth, and multiple storage spaces. These lie-flat seats offer direct-aisle access and the ability to relax in a chaise lounge position. Additional amenities exclusive to the Flagship Suite® Preferred seat include Nest Bedding® with a mattress pad, a throw blanket, memory foam lumbar pillow, as well as Nest Bedding® pajamas and an exclusive amenity kit from Thirteen Lune by Joanna Vargas and Relevant.
The first aircraft outfitted with these new seats will take flight on a new Boeing 787-9 in October 2024 featuring the brand new Flagship Suite®. The first route will be between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Brisbane Airport (BNE). No pricing has been released for these seats.
Adding a premium seat to the first row of Business Class seems to be the latest trend and Lufthansa also said that it will have a similar offering on its new Allegris-outfitted aircraft (more here). United Airlines has also been testing the waters by surveying passengers around upsells they would buy if it offered a differentiated product in its Polaris® cabins (including a press-to-order Champagne button).
Anthony’s Take: Airlines got rid of First Class and now they’re bringing it back with a different name. These seats look great and it will be interesting to see what Delta and United do to copy American.
