A Florida woman was sentenced to nine months in jail for assaulting a flight attendant on a Frontier Airlines flight between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Long Island Mac Arthur Airport (ISP) in January 2022. The plane was forced to divert to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) after the incident.
The US Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that Jessica Navarro, 31, of Winter Springs, FL was sentenced to serve a nine-month jail stint followed by one year of supervised release. She pleaded guilty to one count of interfering with a flight crew, one count of assaulting a flight attendant, and one count of assaulting a passenger. While in flight, she was intoxicated. This led her to kick the seats in front of her, spit on passengers, and assault both a member of the flight crew and another passenger.
US Attorney, Jacqueline C. Romero, said:
Jessica Navarro’s violent conduct endangered and traumatized passengers, and severely inconvenienced everyone aboard that plane. Air travel can already be a stressful experience, and the last thing anyone should have to deal with is such drunken and dangerous behavior en route to their destination. If you commit a federal crime aboard an aircraft, expect to be held accountable.”
Navarro made her pleading in June 2023, but sentencing was not handed down until last Friday.
Anthony’s Take: As I’ve said many times before, watch your alcohol intake while flying. Getting drunk and then boarding a plane is often a recipe for disaster. Hopefully, this sentence teaches her a lesson and serves as a warning to others.
