The traffic and construction on Interstate 90 are bad, but don’t expect to take a flight between the two Chicago-area airports soon. On Monday, United Airlines flew an Airbus A320 between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). The 20-mile route was operated this week to reposition the plane for a White Sox charter flight to New York City.

The flight had no passengers, but it still appeared on flight-tracking websites because airlines are required to share their flight manifests.

Anthony’s Take: Positioning flights happen all the time. This frequently happens between the airports in the metro regions of Washington DC, New York City, and even South Florida. United says that it will have air taxis from Chicago to O’Hare in the next few years, but don’t expect to take an Airbus A320 for a hop across Chicago.

Dumb. They should have just had the Sox fly out of ORD instead of MDW.
It’s all about what the client wants. The White Sox field is much closer to Midway than it is O’Hare. The team is the one paying for the reposition from ORD to MDW…I’m sure the White Sox had the option of flying out of ORD and not paying for the reposition and they still did. That’s how sports charters work.
35+ years ago, AA had a flight that originated at DCA, landed at IAD, then went on to – I forget where. The reason: Distance restrictions out of DCA.
