JetBlue announced today that it is offering members of its TrueBlue loyalty program the ability to boost their elite status by making sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) donations. This opportunity comes at year’s end and could be a way for members close to qualifying for an elite tier to make it.

JetBlue’s TrueBlue loyalty program has four tiers of elite status known as Mosaic 1, 2, 3, and 4. These require members to earn between 50 to 250 tiles annually to achieve status. One tile is earned for every $100 in spend on JetBlue and one tile is earned for every $1,000 charged on JetBlue’s credit card.

This promotion allows members to earn one tile for every $100 spent on SAF contributions. TrueBlue members can earn up to 10 tiles through SAF contributions (up to a limit of $1,000). Contributions are non-refundable. Tiles earned will be administered by the end of January 2025. Status and perks earned will apply until the end of 2025. SAF contributions can be made here.

SAF is an alternative jet fuel that can reduce lifecycle emissions by roughly 80% as compared to fossil-based jet fuel. JetBlue has doubled SAF in its operations year-over-year since 2020. It has taken delivery from three SAF producers at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and will soon bring the first-ever regular supply of SAF to New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

Since 2022, JetBlue partnered with climate tech company Chooose to offer customers a platform for estimating their share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from flying and to take steps to address them. Contributions made through Chooose go directly to a fund dedicated to covering the cost premium of SAF as compared to conventional jet fuel.

Sara Bogdan, Managing Director of Sustainability at JetBlue, said:

As we enter our sixth year of flying with SAF, we are now making it even easier (and rewarding) for customers to join us in our efforts. Whether you’re celebrating a great year of travel, or planning ahead for next year, we’re inviting you to partner with us to help address the carbon emissions caused by flying through contributions to sustainable aviation fuel.”

United Airlines was the first airline to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for use at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The carrier announced in August that SAF producer, Neste, would provide up to one million gallons of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to United in 2024.

United was the first US airline to set a goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050. This was to be done without relying on voluntary carbon offsets. The airline purchased more sustainable fuel than any US airline in 2023 and the agreement with Neste makes Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) the fifth airport where United has purchased SAF for operational use.

In addition to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), United has purchased SAF for use at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), London Heathrow Airport (LHR), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Anthony’s Take: If you need to earn bonus tiles to top off your status and don’t have time to fly, this might be a way to get there.
