In December, I wrote about Moldovan-Romanian low-cost carrier, HiSky, beginning nonstop flights between Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on June 7th. I was just in Romania this past Halloween (more here) and Bucharest is a charming, cosmopolitan city. While I’m assuming this new service will bring more Romanian tourists to the US versus Americans traveling there, it’s great to see a nonstop option.

New York OTP

This new route will operate 4x weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (until October when it drops to 3x without the Saturday flights) on an Airbus A330-200 with 24 Business Class and 250 Economy Class seats.

Iulian Scorpan, CEO of HiSky, said:

We are extremely proud to officially reopen this strategic route after more than two decades. Starting June, New York will once again be listed on Otopeni Airport’s Departures-Arrivals board. This is a significant milestone for HiSky and even more so for Romania and all passengers wishing to travel across the ocean without stopovers or time wasted at other airports. The USA is now a viable travel option for the first time since air travel became accessible to everyone. We are delighted to be the ones paving this way. Three years ago, when we began operations, we aimed to be the primary choice for Romanian passengers. We’ve proven our worth through thousands of flights across Europe, and now we’re excited to give them this gift right before the holidays.”

HiSky is a relatively new airline that began service in April 2021. From Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP), HiSky operates eight regular international routes to Brussels Airport (BRU), Barcelona Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), Bordeaux Airport (BOD), Chișinău International Airport (KIV), Dublin Airport (DUB), Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA), Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport (TLV), as well as two domestic routes to Cluj “Avram Iancu” International Airport (CLJ) and Timișoara International Airport (TSR).

Anthony’s Take: We had a great time in Romania, and Bucharest in particular. It’s largely undiscovered by Americans and offers great value for travelers. Hopefully, these new flights will provide some additional exposure.
