Eastern Airlines was founded in 1926. It operated as an American carrier until it was liquidated in 1991. American Airlines took over many of its routes from Miami International Airport (MIA) and Delta Air Lines purchased many of its aircraft. The name remained dormant until 2015 when it resurfaced as a charter airline. It was dissolved in 2017. In 2018, Dynamic International Airways acquired the intellectual property rights and started flying again.
The carrier was flying from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Miami International Airport (MIA), and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to several destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America. All routes have ceased operating except flights between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in the Dominican Republic. Now, Eastern Airlines is applying to fly between New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (WUH) with a stop at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC).
The Department of Transportation (DOT) needs to approve this route in order for it to operate. Eastern wanted to start service in January. Last October, the airline wanted to fly between New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). It took 10 months for approval and the carrier scrapped its plans for the route.
Given the negative association that many have with Wuhan due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the simply odd route network of having one flight to China and one to the Dominican Republic, I’m not sure I understand the business strategy of this airline. Its commercial fleet consists of three Boeing 767-200, one Boeing 767-200ER, eight Boeing 767-300ER, and three Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. The airline still operates charters and also has a cargo fleet, but its commercial service will only have these two disparate routes.
Anthony’s Take: We’ll see if Eastern Airlines gets approval for its Wuhan flights and then if the airline actually flies there. It seems an odd route to add for an airline that has largely been flying to the Caribbean and Latin America.
