Voodoo Doughnut opened its first location in Portland, OR back in 2003. What started as a single location has expanded to 23 shops across Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. While we were home (in Chicago) for a few days this week, we had to check out the newest location that just opened on December 16th in our neighborhood. Even though it has Fulton Market in its name, it’s in the West Loop.
Anthony’s Take: Voodoo Doughnut offers some of the most creative doughnut flavors and designs I have ever seen. There is a large variety displayed like jewels in rotating cases near the front counter. We enjoyed the few flavors that we sampled and will definitely be back for more. It’s dangerous having Voodoo Doughnut and Levain Bakery (review here) so close to home.
A large counter fills the front of the store with rotating display cases flanking both sides.
Behind the counter you can see racks of brightly colored doughnuts waiting for homes.
There are so many choices and a menu card on the counter helps you figure out each flavor and type.
The display cases on either side of the counter offer hunger-inducing views of some of the doughnuts.
They all looked so good.
The left wall of the shop has some tables for eating your doughnuts there. In addition to tons of different doughnuts, Voodoo Doughnut offers coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, and juice.
We selected a Double Chocolate, a PB&C (which is a limited flavor), a Marshall Mathers, and a Voodoo Doll. All of them were fresh and tasty.
Overall Impression: We’ll definitely be back for more doughnuts. It was hard to pick the few we did and there are lots of other flavors that we want to try.
