Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of my least favorite airports. It’s dated and lacks the same quality of restaurants and lounges found at many other major international airports. The situation for passengers on Avianca, TAP Air Portugal, and those flying other Star Alliance carriers (like United) is about to get a bit better now that the two airlines have opened a joint lounge.

The 6,559-square-foot lounge can accommodate 158 guests and will offer food and beverages, showers, relaxation areas, workspaces, and a children’s play area. The lounge is located near gate J4 (where you’ll also find LATAM’s lounge). Passengers departing from Terminals H and J will have easy access to this lounge. Those flying Business Class or holding Star Alliance Gold status will be allowed to use the new facilities. This includes Air Canada, COPA Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Turkish, and United Airlines. ITA Airways also flies from Terminal H and will have access once the carrier joins Star Alliance.

The lounge also belongs to Priority Pass, so holders of those memberships from various credit cards will also be able to access this new lounge. Avianca used to have a lounge at Miami International Airport (MIA). The space closed for four years with renovations going on between October 2024 and earlier this month. The old lounge was hot, crowded, and miserable. This new space should be a marked improvement. The lounge is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

TAP Air Portugal & Avianco VIP Lounge Opening

Sofia Lufinha, TAP’s Chief Customer Officer., said:

Our first-ever lounge to open outside of Portugal brings a little bit of Portugal to life in Miami. Here, with all the comforts of a new business class lounge, our guests may also enjoy favorite foods and refreshments, including cheeses and pastries such as pastéis de nata, Portuguese red wine, vinho verde and port wine.  It’s all part of TAP’s focus to deliver the most comfortable travel experience for our passengers.”

Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca, added:

At Avianca, we continue to elevate the travel experience for our passengers. This new VIP lounge is just the beginning, in 2025 we will inaugurate two new lounges, launch new routes in Business Class Americas, and present renewed experiences in Insignia. With this investment, we are reinforcing our focus on comfort, convenience, and exceptional service, ensuring that travelers enjoy an unforgettable experience while traveling through one of our most important markets like Miami.”

Other lounges at Miami International Airport (MIA) include two American Airlines Admirals Clubs (Gate D15 and D30), an American Airlines Flagship Lounge, The Centurion Lounge by American Express, a Delta Sky Club®, the LATAM VIP Lounge, and the Turkish Airlines Lounge.

Anthony’s Take: I’m happy to see some Star Alliance love at Miami International Airport (MIA). It still surprises me that United does not operate a lounge there. At least UA passengers with Star Alliance Gold status will be able to use this one.
