American Express Travel just released its 2023 Global Travel Trends Report, which highlights trends for the travel industry this year. The report is based on survey data from Australian, Canadian, Mexican, Japanese, Indian, British, and American travelers. The survey found that travelers are looking to vacation more this year (52%) and to spend more as they do (50%). 85% are looking to take two or more trips this year. I know I’m looking at many more.

The three main takeaways were that travelers are looking to:

  • Jet Set: 75% have been inspired to travel to somewhere they’ve seen on social media
  • Travel for Food: 81% replied that they were looking forward to traveling to taste local fare
  • Focus on Wellness: 57% plan to take extended vacations to focus on health and wellness

In addition, 84% of Gen Z and Millennials would rather take a vacation than purchase something tangible (prioritizing experiences over objects as they have the past few years). 79% also agreed that travel is an important priority for their budgets. Pop culture and social media are heavily influencing younger travelers.

70% of Gen Z and Millennials say they want to visit a destination they’ve seen on TV or in a movie.

American Express Travel President Audrey Hendley added,

Travelers are getting inspiration from a number of places. Whether it’s engaging with local communities, recreating favorite onscreen moments, or planning an entire trip around a specific restaurant, one thing that’s clear is that people continue to value and feel passionately about travel. As demand for travel continues, we know our customers on a deep level and can use our expertise to plan all types of trips.”

Anthony’s Take: This survey sums up some of my feelings around travel. I’m looking for things off the beaten path, to eat with the locals, and have been inspired by social media and TV (The White Lotus made me book another trip to Sicily). Wherever your travels take you, get out and explore the world.
