American Airlines flight AA1006 from Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS) to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) was forced to divert to Denver International Airport (DEN) after pilots reported an engine issue. The plane safely landed before bursting into flames and forcing passengers to evacuate onto the wing and via slides.

The Boeing 737-800 landed without issue, but the right engine quickly burst into flames.

All of the passengers and crew were able to evacuate the aircraft with no serious injuries being reported (12 passengers were reportedly taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment).

American Airlines dispatched a replacement aircraft to Denver International Airport (DEN). The flight is now scheduled to depart around six hours after the initial flight left Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS) and is showing that it will arrive around 4:00 AM.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the following statement:

American Airlines Flight 1006 diverted to and landed safely at Denver International Airport around 5:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, March 13, after the crew reported engine vibrations.

After landing and while taxiing to the gate, an engine caught fire, and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides. The Boeing 737-800 departed Colorado Springs Airport and was headed to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.”

A further investigation will be conducted by the FAA. American Airlines flight AA 1006 has been cancelled for today, March 14th.

Anthony’s Take: The video looks terrifying, but thankfully it appears that everyone is okay. The pilots did a good job of getting the aircraft safely on the ground with all 178 passengers okay.
