Delta Air Lines flight DL185 was scheduled to fly from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) when it hit a hailstorm and sustained enough damage that it needed to make an emergency landing at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO).
The Boeing 767-300ER departed on time, but sustained substantial damage and had to divert and landed 65 minutes after takeoff.
The hailstorm damaged its right wing, both engines, radome (weatherproof enclosure that protects a radar system), and along the edges of both wings.
Thankfully, the plane landed safely and no injuries have been reported. The Daily Mail is reporting that a severe storm was passing through at the time with tennis-ball-sized hail and flash floods throughout Northern Italy.
Delta released a statement that reads:
The Milan Malpensa to JFK flight was diverted to Rome after it encountered adverse weather after take off. The landing in Rome happened safely without incident and the passengers disembarked normally. The aircraft was damaged because of the weather and is now being examined by maintenance staff.”
@delta flight #185 from MXP to JFK gets pummeled by hail on take off and makes emergency landing in Rome. Safety 1st, but then @delta leaves passenger hanging by telling us via text that they don’t have options to rebook us, just offer us ecredits? Poor service, scary incident! pic.twitter.com/Zw9sCXRKUO

Passenger Jeffrey Saunders tweeted that Delta did not offer assistance with rebooking, but offered vouchers (this seems odd to me).
The flight was cancelled after landing as I’m sure this aircraft needs some serious assessments and repairs before it will be fit to fly.
Anthony’s Take: It had to be scary to be on that flight. Kudos to the crew for safely landing the plane without injuries.
