Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to become the newest member of the oneworld® alliance after receiving an official invitation to join the global airline group during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
The announcement marks one of the most significant alliance developments in recent years and will make Philippine Airlines the 16th member of oneworld®, further strengthening the alliance’s presence in Southeast Asia. Once fully integrated, Philippine Airlines will become only the second full oneworld® member airline based in Southeast Asia, joining Malaysia Airlines and giving travelers expanded access to one of the region’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
The move represents a significant achievement for the Philippine flag carrier, which operates an extensive network throughout the Philippines, Asia, Australia, North America, and the Middle East. By joining oneworld®, Philippine Airlines will gain access to a global network spanning nearly 1,000 destinations across more than 170 countries and territories. The airline’s extensive domestic operation will also help strengthen the alliance’s connectivity within the Philippines and provide alliance customers with easier access to key destinations throughout the archipelago.
The partnership is expected to increase passenger traffic across PAL’s network while enhancing the airline’s global visibility and competitiveness. For frequent flyers, the alliance membership will unlock a host of new benefits. Members of Philippine Airlines’ Mabuhay Miles loyalty program will eventually be able to earn and redeem miles across all oneworld® member airlines. Top-tier PAL customers will also receive oneworld® status benefits, including priority check-in, preferred boarding, extra baggage allowances, and access to more than 700 premium airport lounges worldwide. Eligible travelers will additionally gain access to exclusive First Class lounges and dedicated premium check-in facilities when flying on participating oneworld® carriers. The expanded loyalty benefits are expected to make Philippine Airlines significantly more attractive to both business and leisure travelers seeking seamless global connectivity.

Philippine Airlines’ addition comes at a time when major global airline alliances have seen relatively little expansion compared to previous decades. The move strengthens oneworld’s already substantial presence in Asia, where existing members include Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, and Qantas. The alliance currently consists of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines.
For oneworld®, PAL’s entry provides additional connectivity to one of Asia’s largest aviation markets while creating new opportunities for travelers connecting between North America, Australia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. The invitation signals growing recognition of Philippine Airlines’ role as a key international carrier and highlights the Philippines’ increasing importance as a global aviation gateway.
As the airline prepares for full integration into the alliance, passengers can expect a more seamless travel experience, expanded route options, enhanced loyalty benefits, and greater access to premium services throughout the oneworld® network.
PAL Holdings, Inc. President Lucio C. Tan III, said:
This is a defining and transformative moment for Philippine Airlines. Becoming a member of the oneworld Alliance and strengthening Southeast Asia’s representation within the group significantly brings the Philippines and the region closer to the world like never before. Together with our partners, we will deliver greater choice, consistent journeys, and a world-class travel experience that reflects the warmth of Filipino hospitality.”
Ole Orvér, oneworld chief executive officer, added:
Philippine Airlines is a globally respected carrier with a strong commitment to innovation and customer service that aligns with oneworld’s reputation for delivering a premium experience across the travel journey. This decision is an endorsement of oneworld, and its global customer offering. We look forward to welcoming Philippine Airlines into the alliance.”
Anthony’s Take: For Philippine Airlines, joining one of the world’s leading airline alliances marks the beginning of a new era. It’s one that positions the carrier as an even stronger bridge connecting the Philippines to the rest of the world and I’m happy to see this addition.
