Southwest Airlines is continuing its network growth with the announcement of several new routes set to launch in early 2027. These focus largely on sunny leisure destinations and underserved city pairs across the United States.

The expansion includes eight new domestic routes and one new international service to reinforce Southwest’s strategy of connecting smaller markets with popular vacation destinations while capitalizing on growing demand for leisure travel.

Beginning February 13th, Southwest plans to launch the following routes:

  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) to/from Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) to/from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
  • Indianapolis International Airport (IND) to/from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)
  • Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) to/from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  • Nashville International Airport (BNA) to/from Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR)
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to/from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)
  • Portland International Jetport (PWM) to/from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  • Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) to/from Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
  • Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

Only two of these routes have previously been operated by Southwest, while the remaining services represent entirely new additions to the carrier’s network. Most of the new routes will operate once weekly on Saturdays.

Several of the newly announced routes are currently served by low-cost carrier Breeze Airways, which suggests Southwest sees an opportunity to compete more aggressively in smaller leisure-focused markets. The airline’s latest expansion continues a broader trend of targeting travelers seeking nonstop access to warm-weather destinations without connecting through larger hubs. Florida remains a major beneficiary of the new schedule, with Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Sarasota, and West Palm Beach all gaining additional Southwest service.

Perhaps the most notable addition is Southwest’s new international route between Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Liberia, Costa Rica. The route marks another milestone in Nashville’s rapid growth as an increasingly important city within Southwest’s network. In recent years, the airline has significantly expanded its presence in Tennessee’s capital, turning Nashville into a key connecting point for travelers across its system. The new Costa Rica service is expected to appeal not only to Nashville-area travelers but also to passengers connecting from smaller Southwest markets throughout the United States.

The announcement follows an aggressive period of network expansion for Southwest. The carrier has launched dozens of new routes in recent years as it adapts its network strategy to changing travel demand patterns. By focusing on leisure-oriented destinations and selectively expanding internationally, Southwest appears to be doubling down on some of its strongest-performing markets while continuing to challenge both legacy carriers and newer low-cost competitors.

Anthony’s Take: For travelers looking ahead to winter 2027, the latest additions offer more nonstop options to beaches, sunshine, and popular vacation destinations across North America and the Caribbean.
