United Airlines is preparing for one of its busiest summers ever. It forecasts more than 53 million travelers between June and August, which is roughly three million more passengers than last year. Global events and once-in-a-lifetime experiences are fueling a major boost in international travel demand.
The airline also expects approximately 3.9 million travelers during the Memorial Day holiday period alone from May 21st through May 27th. According to United, travelers are increasingly planning trips around major global moments ranging from a total solar eclipse in Europe to international soccer tournaments and high-profile concert tours.
One of the biggest demand drivers is the August 12th total solar eclipse, with “astro-tourism” surging across Europe. United says bookings are up more than 50% to destinations including Santiago de Compostela, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Madrid, Barcelona, Reykjavík, and Nuuk ahead of the celestial event. United currently serves 35 destinations located within the eclipse’s viewing path (including several in the zone of totality).

International soccer is also helping drive a spike in travel bookings. United reports nearly 20% higher aggregate bookings to North American host cities staging major international matches between June 11th and June 27th, including Mexico City, Guadalajara, Toronto, and Los Angeles. The airline noted that its hubs at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) provide direct flights to all host cities.
Concert tourism is adding another layer to the summer travel boom. United says bookings to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) are up compared to last year during a major concert residency (Harry Styles) running from May 16th through June 5th with especially strong demand for flights around the final performance date. Meanwhile, bookings to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) have also climbed year over year ahead of a late July concert series with travel demand up roughly 10% leading into shows scheduled July 26th to 30th.
Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United, said:
Whether travelers are flying to witness a solar eclipse, cheer on their team or see their favorite artist live, our goal is to provide convenient flight options and a seamless travel experience, making it easy for them to get wherever they want go around the world. With the largest global route network – and the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific – we’re connecting customers to the moments that matter most this summer.”
Anthony’s Take: Summer travel just keeps on going strong. It’s amazing to me that after years with the pandemic behind us that people are still taking to the skies with such gusto. With travelers increasingly prioritizing experiences tied to sports, entertainment, and rare natural phenomena, United says summer 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest once again.
