American Airlines is celebrating a century of aviation history and commemorating 100 years since its origins with systemwide customer activations, special flights, and exclusive experiences that honor its legacy while looking ahead to the future. The milestone traces back to April 15, 1926, when a DH-4 biplane departed Chicago for St. Louis carrying only mail under Robertson Aircraft Corporation. That flight laid the foundation for what would eventually become one of the world’s largest and most recognizable airlines.
Over the past century, American has played a central role in shaping modern aviation (from early passenger service on the Douglas DC-3 to the Jet Age ushered in by the Boeing 707 and the development of the hub-and-spoke system that defines global air travel today). Throughout those years, both customers and employees have been integral to the airline’s growth, innovation, and resilience.
To mark the anniversary, American is hosting celebrations across 11 locations throughout its network. At major hubs including Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA), New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) customers traveling on the 100th scheduled departure of the day will be part of special onboard and gate festivities. These events will feature commemorative keepsakes and curated experiences designed to reflect the airline’s past and future.
In lounges across the system, including Flagship® and Admirals Club® locations, customers can enjoy themed cocktails and small bites inspired by culinary trends from the last century. Additional celebrations will take place at New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) (offering unique surprises tied to the airline’s history).

American is also highlighting the milestone in the skies with special flights and aircraft liveries. A Boeing 777 operating Flight 100 to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) will feature the “Flagship DFW” heritage livery, while a centennial-themed aircraft will operate Flight 1926 between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL), which is a nod to the airline’s first route.

Beyond the airport experience, American is launching a range of commemorative products and storytelling initiatives. A limited-edition merchandise collaboration with travel brand Sprayground is now available for preorder, alongside a broader collection of centennial-themed items in the airline’s online store. In May, pilots will begin distributing exclusive centennial trading cards, offering customers a collectible piece of the celebration. Throughout the year, American will continue to share stories from its history, highlighting key milestones, employee contributions, and defining moments that shaped the airline’s evolution.
Anthony’s Take: As it celebrates 100 years of connecting people and places, American Airlines is not only honoring its past but also reinforcing its commitment to innovation, customer experience, and the future of travel.
