I’ve long said that United has the best mobile app of any airline. Now, it’s adding even more and rolling out a new digital feature designed to help travelers better navigate airport security while introducing estimated TSA wait times directly within its mobile app. The feature is part of a pilot program that’s now available at the airline’s major US hub airports, including Chicago International Airport (ORD), Denver International Airport (DEN), Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Newark International Airport (EWR), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
United’s new tool marks the first time a major US airline has integrated real-time TSA wait time estimates into its own app using internally collected data. Travelers can view updated wait times throughout the day to allow them to better plan when to arrive at the airport and which security lanes to use. The feature also breaks down estimated wait times by checkpoint type including standard screening and TSA PreCheck® to give passengers more control over their airport experience.
The wait time tracker is built into the Travel section of the United mobile app and is designed to reduce uncertainty during one of the most stressful parts of flying. By offering near real-time updates, the airline aims to help customers make informed decisions and avoid unexpected delays at security checkpoints.

The new feature is the latest addition to United’s growing suite of digital tools aimed at improving the customer journey. The app already includes features such as a virtual gate assistant, real-time baggage tracking similar to package delivery updates, and tools that help passengers navigate connections with turn-by-turn directions and estimated walking times.
United has also expanded its self-service offerings to reduce the need for in-person assistance at the airport. Passengers can receive automatic rebooking options during disruptions, track their luggage more precisely using integrated location-sharing technology, and access meal or hotel vouchers when eligible. The app also provides real-time weather updates to help travelers understand how conditions across the country may impact their flights.
The introduction of TSA wait time tracking reflects a broader industry shift toward greater transparency and personalization. As travelers increasingly rely on mobile tools to manage their journeys, airlines are investing in technology that empowers customers with more information and control.
Anthony’s Take: With the pilot now live across United’s hub airports, the airline will likely evaluate performance and customer feedback before expanding the feature further. If successful, the initiative could set a new standard for how airlines help passengers navigate airport congestion, particularly during peak travel periods when security lines can be unpredictable.
