Hotel Review: Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt

Last week, I had to be in Washington DC for a night and decided to check out the Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt. The hotel opened in January 2020 and is part of The Yards, which is a 42-acre waterfront development in the Capitol Riverfront’s Navy Yard neighborhood. The area offers retail, restaurants, high-end residences, and cultural attractions including the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail and The Yards Park. The hotel worked perfectly for me and was a short ride from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Anthony’s Take: The Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt is in a good location if you’re coming in from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). The staff was friendly and I was proactively upgraded to a Junior Suite King. The Hyatt Privé rate I booked provided excellent value and I had a delicious room service dinner with the $100 credit that it included.

Booking

I booked a 1 King Bed room through Hyatt Privé for $240 per night plus taxes. It was the same rate as booking a “Members Advance Purchase” rate on Hyatt.com, but gave me the flexibility of being able to cancel. Transportation to/from the Hotel

I took an Uber Comfort from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) to the hotel. It cost $39 and took about 10 minutes to drive the approximately 4.9 miles with light traffic. When I left the hotel to head back to the airport, I also took an Uber Comfort. It cost $65 and the ride was a little longer in the rain.

Location

As mentioned, the hotel is in the Navy Yard neighborhood. It’s convenient to get to many restaurants, shops, and attractions from this property.

The lobby is not huge, but offers a nice array of seating choices.

Water was available in the lobby.

Check-in

I arrived around 2:00 PM and my suite was ready. The agent that assisted me was friendly and explained the breakfast benefit that my Globalist status provided at the hotel as well as what was included with the Hyatt Privé rate. He offered me late checkout (which I did not need) and told me that I had been upgraded to a Junior Suite King. He then printed my keys and I was on my way.

There was some additional seating as well as bicycles for guest use near reception.

Elevators are across the lobby on the opposite end from reception.

The elevator lobby and hallways on my floor were clean and in good repair.

Junior Suite King (326)

There are 225 rooms and suites at the Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt.

The suite opened with a small foyer that included a bench and wardrobe.

The wardrobe contained a luggage rack, iron, ironing board, robes, and a safe.

A large mirror was mounted on the wall nearby.

Next to the mirror was a desk/mini bar with chair.

A Nespresso machine, coffee pods, water, cups, condiments, and other items were on the counter as well as some items for sale.

A refrigerator was below.

The living room area was straight ahead. It held a sofa, chair, and some tables.

A TV was mounted on the wall between the living room area and bedroom.

The bedroom held a king-sized bed with a bench and two nightstands.

The bathroom was located here. It offered a vanity with a single sink, glassed-in shower, and toilet.

The vanity offered a good amount of counter space.

Bottles of BOWMAKERS brand hand soap and lotion were on the counter.

The shower was across. It was pretty standard size with decent water pressure and temperature control.

More toiletries were on a shelf in the shower.

I liked that the toilet was separated with a partition.

A bar of chocolate was provided to me at check-in. A knock on the door brought some nuts as a welcome amenity.

Dinner

As mentioned, I received a $100 food and beverage credit for booking a Hyatt Privé rate. I used this for in-room dining and had a delicious meal (it cost $98 with tip, tax, and fees). I loved the Focaccia and Lobster Bucatini along with two ginger ales. The lobster was fresh and the saffron cream sauce was amazing.

Public Areas & Amenities

The hotel offers all of the seating pictured above as well as a fitness center, ATM, mini market near reception (pictured above), rooftop bar, restaurant, and lobby bar.

The bar is closed during the day and located in the lobby.

The ATM is located near the elevators.

The fitness center is in the basement and the elevators open directly into it.

I was happy to see Peloton Bikes.

Water and towels were on offer.

Overall Impression:

I had a nice stay at the Thompson Washington DC, by Hyatt until the end. The Hyatt Privé rate added great value and the dinner it provided was delicious. I’ll definitely by returning.
