Spirit Airlines is gearing up for one of the biggest travel weekends of the spring by launching new limited-time nonstop service to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) ahead of the Kentucky Derby.

To help travelers reach the iconic race at Churchill Downs, Spirit is adding (2x weekly) nonstop flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and increasing frequency from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) (up to 6x weekly). The Derby flights will operate on April 30th and May 3rd. These were designed specifically to accommodate the surge of visitors traveling to Louisville for Derby weekend festivities and make it easier for many passengers to get to the races.

Spirit already serves Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) with nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). These will bump up to 3x weekly. The added options provide even more flexibility for racegoers coming from key East Coast and Florida markets. In addition to the nonstop routes, Spirit will also offer one-stop connections from 14 cities into Louisville during Derby week to give travelers across its network additional ways to reach the event.

The Kentucky Derby remains one of the most popular sporting and cultural events in the United States and it draws large crowds each year. Spirit’s expanded service reflects growing demand for affordable, convenient air travel to Louisville during the peak race period.

Andrea Lusso, Vice President of Network Planning, said:

We’re always looking to make it easier for our Guests to experience exciting events like the Kentucky Derby, and our limited-time flights provide a great value for more visitors to get to Churchill Downs. Derby fans can enjoy an elevated experience out the gate with Spirit’s premium options that deliver extra perks and comfort for their journey.”

Anthony’s Take: If the Kentucky Derby is in your travel plans this spring, Spirit is making it easier to get to the races. I’ve never been, but a colleague and friend lives in Louisville and has told me what a good time this annual event is for locals and race fans alike.
