Lufthansa’s centennial celebrations moved into a new phase today as the airline’s specially painted Boeing 787-9 arrived at Frankfurt Airport (FRA). The aircraft named “Berlin,” flew in from Boeing’s Everett facility and marked the official arrival of the first aircraft in the carrier’s dedicated 100th-anniversary fleet that I first wrote about last month. The aircraft will enter service in the next few weeks.

The Boeing 787-9 showcases a dramatic livery that mixes nearly a century of heritage with Lufthansa’s forward-looking identity. A deep blue fuselage features an oversized white crane whose wings blend into the aircraft’s own to create a striking silhouette. The livery also incorporates a prominent “100” on the left side of the fuselage, a “1926 | 2026” timeline graphic on the right, and a large “100” on the underside to make the aircraft instantly recognizable from the ground or sky.

Lufthansa will officially mark its 100th anniversary on January 6th. This date commemorates the founding of the first Lufthansa in 1926 and the airline’s maiden flight that followed in April of the same year. The airline will launch a six-aircraft anniversary fleet throughout 2026 with the new Boeing 787-9 serving as the flagship. Additional aircraft receiving the commemorative livery will include an Airbus A380, an Airbus A350-1000, an Airbus A350-900, an Airbus A320, and a Boeing 747-8. Each will be repainted over the coming months and completed by fall 2026.

Jens Ritter, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Airlines, said:
These are the particularly beautiful and unforgettable moments in our job. It’s always a special moment to take delivery of a brand-new aircraft – but today’s landing of this anniversary Boeing 787-9, with its extraordinary special livery marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first ‘Luft Hansa’, was even more exciting and fascinating.”
Anthony’s Take: As I’ve said many times before, I love custom liveries. This one is quite impressive and I can’t wait to see the rest of the fleet. Happy anniversary, Lufthansa!
