Maybe the airlines have oversaturated the transatlantic market. Delta has cited some sluggishness and now United is reducing frequencies on several routes to/from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) for summer 2026. These cuts come only weeks after United announced a wave of new transatlantic routes.

According to recent schedule updates flagged by Aeroroutes, United will reduce or cancel several planned frequencies next summer to/from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). These include:

  • Brussels Airport (BRU) (The previously planned second daily seasonal flight has been cancelled)
  • Edinburgh Airport (EDI) (The previously planned second daily seasonal flight has been cancelled)
  • Frankfurt Airport (FRA) (Reduced from 11x to 7x weekly flights beginning March 26th)

These reductions come despite United’s strong forward momentum in Europe. Even with the cuts, peak summer 2026 will still see the airline operating 300 weekly departures from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to 36 European cities (compared to 304 departures to 32 cities at the same point in 2025). The slight decrease in total weekly flights is offset by a broader geographic footprint and the introduction of new destinations.

United 2026

Beginning in summer 2026, United will launch nonstop service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to:

  • Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (BRI) (4x weekly; starts on May 1st)
  • Glasgow Airport (GLA) (1x daily; starts on May 8th)
  • Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ) (3x weekly; starts on May 27th)
  • Split Saint Jerome Airport (SPI) (3x weekly; starts on April 30th)

United will be the only US airline offering nonstop service to all four cities. This further strengthens its commitment to providing unique transatlantic connectivity.

Anthony’s Take: Despite the reductions, summer 2026 is shaping up to be huge for United and further announcements may still be on the horizon. The combination of new cities, restored routes, and strategic cuts underscores the airline’s continued focus on dominating transatlantic travel from its Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) hub.
