Oktoberfest festivities have returned to Lufthansa starting this weekend. This is the 19th year that the German airline has had its flight crews decked out in traditional attire and served festive meals in all cabins and some lounges (I wrote about this last year). Like past years, this will be showcased on select long-haul flights from Munich International Airport (MUC).
Oktoberfest Uniforms
Lufthansa’s traditional “Trachten” costume was first worn this year by flight attendants taking off from Munich International Airport (MUC) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) yesterday, September 20th. The next special flight will be to Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) on September 29th.
The custom for the crew to wear Bavarian garments on numerous European and German routes from Munich during the Oktoberfest season has happened for the past 19 years. Some Lufthansa ground staff at the gates in Munich International Airport (MUC) Terminal 2 will also greet their passengers in this traditional dress. Women will wear “dirndls” and men will sport traditional suits. The traditional garments were designed and tailored by the Munich-based Angermaier. The collection was certified according to “STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX.” All components and materials have been sustainably produced and processed.
Oktoberfest Delicacies
Until the end of September, special dishes like roast chicken to mushroom ragout with pretzel dumplings and roasted almonds, as well as Oktoberfest chocolates, will be served on select flights. In Premium Economy and Economy Class, Nuremberg bratwurst is served with Bavarian cabbage and mashed potatoes. Bavarian cream with raspberries is also served in all classes. In addition to popular Bavarian beer varieties, the limited edition Lufthansa cocktail known as the “Avionic Wiesn Edition”(an aperitif with peach, fresh citrus fruits, wild meadow herbs, and marigold).
The Lufthansa Senator and Business Lounges in Munich will be serving potato soup, roast pork, and steamed dumplings with vanilla sauce. The Lufthansa First Class Lounge in Munich will serve Bavarian duck breast and sweet Oktoberfest treats.
Anthony’s Take: I wish was flying Lufthansa over the next week as this is a lot of fun. The food sounds delicious and it really adds to the festivities.
