This is so sad. A pair of deer were struck by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 as the aircraft landed at Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport (ADQ) in Alaska yesterday morning. The deer were crossing the runway this morning when the accident occurred. A third deer managed to escape colliding with the aircraft.

AS 231 Flight Status

Alaska Airlines flight AS 231 landed a few minutes early from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC). Both deer were confirmed dead and the aircraft required repairs. This led to subsequent flights from Kodiak to be cancelled. No passengers or crew were injured.

A witness named Erin Edwards captured the collision with the deer while filming arriving planes at the airport. Thankfully, the video is zoomed out enough that you barely see anything, but the thought of the two deer being killed is sad.

An Alaska Airlines spokesperson shared the following statement with Paddle Your Own Kanoo:

On July 24, at approximately 8:00 a.m. Alaska time, Alaska Airlines Flight 231, a Boeing 737 aircraft, was landing at Kodiak Airport. During the landing rollout, the aircraft came into contact with at least two deer that were crossing the runway.

The aircraft safely taxied to the station. No guests or employees were injured in the incident. An inspection found damage to the aircraft’s main landing gear that will require repairs in Kodiak.”

Animal strikes happen more often than you might think. Back in January, I wrote about a coyote colliding with a Boeing 737 MAX 9 that was operated by United Airlines at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

Anthony’s Take: I often say that I like animals more than people. It’s a shame that these two deer were killed in this accident.
