United Airlines flight UA507 from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) was forced to divert around eight hours into the flight due to a mechanical issue. The 26-year-old Boeing 777-200 encountered an undisclosed issue that forced the aircraft to find a diversion point and Reykjavík’s Keflavík Airport (KEF) was chosen in Iceland.
The aircraft was halfway across the Atlantic on Saturday when the decision was made. People reports that the aircraft rapidly descended to 21,000 feet and squawked the emergency code 7700 before landing. When pilots set their transponder to 7700, it alerts nearby air traffic control facilities of a general emergency. There were no reported injuries among the 275 passengers and 14 crew on the aircraft. Passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and sent on their way to Rome today.
A United spokesperson shared the following statement:
United Flight 507 from San Francisco to Rome landed safely at Keflavik Airport on Sunday to address a mechanical issue. We scheduled a new flight to take our customers to Rome on Monday and have provided them with hotel accommodations.”
United has 74 Boeing 777-200 aircraft in its fleet. This one was originally flying on behalf of Continental Airlines and became part of United’s fleet after the merger.
Anthony’s Take: Thankfully, the pilots reacted well and got everyone on the ground safely. At least the passengers got to spend a day in Iceland. There are worse places to divert (looking at you Goose Bay Airport).
