Iberia is a Spanish airline that is owned by International Airlines Group (IAG), which also owns British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Vueling. Today, it announced big plans for the future in what it’s calling “2030 Flight Plan.” A €6 billion investment will see an expanded long-haul fleet, new routes, a premium lounge, additional staffing, and more.
The fleet will see significant expansion with the number of long-haul aircraft increasing from 45 to 70 as new Airbus A350s, A321XLRs, and potentially A330NEOs are brought in. IAG has placed an order for all of these aircraft and will distribute them across its owned airlines. Nearly all older-generation aircraft will be replaced with more efficient Airbus A320 and A321 NEOs as the airline marches towards net-zero emissions by 2050.
New routes are being planned to Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. Destinations include:
- Fortaleza-Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR)
- Orlando International Airport (MCO) (previously announced; more here)
- Monterrey International Airport (MTY)
- Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
- Aeroporto Internacional do Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre (REC)
Iberia will also continue exploring new potential routes across the Atlantic. Currently, it flies to nine US airports, including:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Miami International Airport (MIA)
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
- San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
A new Premium Lounge is in development at Terminal 4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD). This will be coupled with renovations coming to all long-haul cabins to make them more comfortable, more attractive, and offer improved connectivity. On narrow-body aircraft, carry-on baggage capacity will also be increased thanks to the addition of XL overhead bins.
2030 Flight Plan also calls for the development of Ciudad Iberia in La Muñoza. This will expand current facilities and relocate the airline’s corporate headquarters there. Iberia is also committing to hiring 1,000 employees per year throughout the duration of 2030 Flight Plan.
Anthony’s Take: This all seems ambitious, but I give Iberia credit for laying out such a comprehensive plan. We’ll have to wait and see how the execution is handled.
